What's a technogypsy?
It's a term used by a coworker of mine to describe the people who basically keep the technology and science moving. Often employed by large industries, although sometimes working as faculty or as a small one-man business, these highly skilled scientists and engineers move about the country from technical problem to problem as the work and money moves. In my case, a large manufacturer of instruments used in plastics, food, medicinal devices, drugs, etc. pays me to supply technical support to its customers, help sales people fit the products to the potential customer, and to keep said customers happy. In any one year, I'll visit all 50 states and in any one week work with everything from Ph.D.'s developing a new drug to marketing folks designing a new product to union members working in a QC lab for a bulk chemical industry. This can be anywhere from small towns in the heart of fly-over country to the large glittering cities of the coast.
